OneDrive and SharePoint are both part of Microsoft 365, but they are designed for different jobs.
OneDrive is mainly for an individual user’s work files. It is a good place for drafts, personal working documents, and files that may later be shared with others.
SharePoint is designed for shared company information. Departments, project teams, and groups can use SharePoint libraries to store files that belong to the organization rather than to one person.
A simple rule is this: if the file belongs mostly to you, OneDrive may be the right location. If the file belongs to a team, department, or company process, SharePoint is usually the better choice.
Using the right location becomes even more important when employees leave the company. Files stored in a team SharePoint site remain with the organization, while files stored only in one person’s OneDrive may require extra work to transfer.
A good Microsoft 365 setup defines clear rules so employees know where information should be stored and shared.
